Mare di Birra

Aquest és un altre esdeveniment dels que vam gaudir aquest estiu, i no en vam dir res en el seu moment... quina gent tant mandrosa!! Doncs bé, l'Anna i jo vam anar al Mare di Birra, el primer creuer de la cervesa artesanal que feia el trajecte Roma-Barcelona-Roma. El Mare di Birra commemora el 10è aniversari del bar Ma Che Siete Venuti a Fa' de Roma.

This is one more event that we enjoyed during last summer 2011, which I didn't say a word about it... what a lazy people we are!! So Anna and me went to the Mare di Birra, the first cruise based on craft beers travelling to Rome-Barcelona-Rome.The Mare di Birra is an event which commemorates the 10th anniversary of Ma Che Siete Venuti a Fa' pub, located in Rome.

Aquesta foto és en el moment del concurs de Homebrewers que es va fer en el creuer. Vaig participar amb la Orangenweiss, una cervesa de blat amb mel de taronger (OG: 1042). 

This picture was taken during the Homebrewer's competition celebrated in the cruise. I participated with Orangenweiss, a wheat beer with orange-tree honey (OG:1042)

Desafortunadament no vaig guanyar (òbviament!), però em va complaure molt la xerrada que vaig tenir amb en Kuaska (tastador professional i un dels membres del jurat). Em va comentar que li recordava molt a un estil de cervesa belga i que entre els 18 participants aquesta es trobava en la 6ª posició. Osti tu, sembla que no però això em va alegrar molt!

Unfortunately, I didn't win the competition (obviously!), although I had a very nice conversation with Kuaska (beer hunter and one of the judges). He told me that my beer was like a belgian one and it was well scored, being at 6th position of 18 participants in total. Wow, this was really exciting!

Després d’unes llargues vacances sense escriure res al bloc, tornem a la càrrega amb notícies fresques sobre el festival de la cervesa a Copenhaguen 

After some long holydays without any single word in this blog, we are ready to come back with more fresh news about CPH Beer Festival.

A les 11h ens disposàvem a marxar del pis de l’Anna per dirigir-nos a l’antiga fàbrica de la Carlsberg. Aquesta és la gentada que ens vam trobar a quarts de dotze...



At 11.00am we were already leaving Anna’s flat in order to walk to the old Carlsberg brewery. This is  the queue at 30 minutes before the festival started...

En Thomas de Mikkeller presentant el Concurs Hop Bomb Challenge 2011, on com ja vaig comentar a l'anterior post, hi vaig participar amb la Black Betty. Sincerament, aquí estava exageradament nerviós ja que faltaven pocs segons per saber qui eren els guanyadors.. uaaaaaaaargghh!!!!!

Ølfestival København 2011 (coming soon)

Després de l’estrena oficial del bloc, us volem anunciar el proper lloc on assistirem... ni més ni menys que al Festival de la Cervesa de Copenhaguen (Ølfestival København 2011)!!

Aquesta serà la 11ª edició, que es celebrarà entre els dies 26 i 28 de maig en un espai proper a l’antiga fàbrica Carlsberg. S’espera que hi assisteixin uns 70 expositors i s’hi podran trobar fins a 700 cerveses diferents (daneses i també d’altres indrets del món). A més, també hi hauran alguns estants per menjar. Quina feinada que tindrem...

D’altra banda, els nois de Mikkeller han organitzat un concurs anomenat Hop Bomb Challenge 2011, el qual es basa en enviar-los-hi mostres de la teva cervesa on el llúpol hi jugui un paper especial.

El fet és que hi hem participat enviant una negra stout elaborada amb “chocolate malt” i amb dry hopping. Per cert, la criatura està batejada com “Black Betty” (sí, el nom ve de la cançó dels Ram Jam). La sorpresa és que hem rebut un correu dels organitzadors comentant que som els únics participants de l’Estat espanyol i que ens proposen una petita entrevista per explicar motivacions, ambicions, com s’ha elaborat la cervesa, entre d’altres... Per cert, el 28 de maig és el mateix dia que es juga la final de la Champions League entre el FC Barcelona i el Manchester United. Després d’un dia al festival, espero arribar sencer per poder veure’l... Me n’oblidava de dir: <<Visca el Barça i visca Catalunya!>>

After the official presentation of our blog, we would like to tell you the next place where we’re going: The Copenhagen Beer Festival (Ølfestival København 2011)!!

This is the 11^th edition, which will be performed from  26^th to 28^th  May near the old Carlsberg brewery. More than 70 exhibitors are expected and more than 700 different beers (Danish and non-Danish beers) as well at the festival (daneses i també d’altres indrets del món). There will be also some places to eat. Wow, what a big job to do..

On the other side, Mikkeller guys are organising a brewing competition named as Hop Bomb Challenge 2011. The basis of this competition is to send them samples of your beer, which the hops play the main role.

The fact is we are participating there, as we sent a black stout brewed with chocolate malt and dry hopping as well. By the way, the baby is called “Black Betty” (yes, this is from Ram Jam’s song). The surprise is we’ve received a mail from the organizers telling us that we’re the only participants from Spain, and they asked to do an interview about brewing motivations, aspirations and so on. By the way, the Champions League final is played on 28^th May (FC Barcelona vs Manchester United). After the festival, just wait to be entire for the match… Just I forgot to say: <<Visca el Barça i visca Catalunya!>>

Qui som? (Who are we?)

Abans de començar a explicar les nostres històries i xafarderies, seria una bona idea presentar-nos i fer una breu introducció dels nostres “passats”.

L’Anna, la meva xicota. La vaig conèixer al lloc on actualment treballem, i d’una manera bastant estúpida... com moltes altres parelles suposo. Llicenciada en Ciència i Tecnologia dels Aliments i actualment fent el doctorat en temes de la qualitat del pernil, vaja, que en el fons vetlla perquè tots mengem pernil sense patir cagarrines. Doncs perquè ho sapigueu, fins fa ben poc l’Anna odiava la cervesa, i l’odiava per dues raons. La primera, perquè no coneixia com de gran pot ser el món cerveser i els diferents estils que existeixen. La segona, perquè treballava en un bar de nit on va acabar farta d’olorar sempre les basses oxidades de les típiques cerveses industrials, les quals va estar servint durant molts caps de setmana, un rere l’altre. Actualment però, s’ha convertit en una autèntica entusiasta...!! Concretament, de les lambic belgues (faros, gueuzes i afruitades) i de tota la màgia i l’art que les envolta.

Jo sóc en Joan. La meva història comença quan, a l’últim any de la llicenciatura de Ciència i Tecnologia dels Aliments, vaig decidir realitzar una estada a l’estranger, però la meva universitat no m’ho permetia per unes raons com “això no et servirà per res” o “una estada Erasmus només serveix per perdre el temps”. Al final, després d’una lluita interminable, ho vaig aconseguir i em van oferir una estada a Gent (Bèlgica) a una universitat molt bonica on hi havia una planta pilot de cervesa. Doncs bé, aquells 6 mesos elaborant, analitzant i tastant cervesa, van ser inoblidables i dels millors de la meva vida, on vaig aprendre una de les coses que més em fascina: elaborar cervesa. D’ençà d’aquesta estada i fins ara, he estat elaborant varies partides, de poc volum però de molts estils diferents. Sense comptar el que encara queda per fer...

Before starting to tell our gossips and such stuff, it could be nice if we introduce ourselves with a small introduction of our “past”.

Anna, she’s my girlfriend. I met her in the place we are currently working, and in a stupid way, by the way... like most couples I guess. She has a Food Science and Technology degree and currently she’s doing her PhD on ham quality and so on. Therefore, she’s taking care of our health through food safety and tries to avoid that we get stomach ache.

So for your interest, Anna used to repudiate beer! Mainly, it was (due) for two reasons. The first one was because of her lack of knowledge about the hundreds of beer styles spreads in the world. The second one, was because she used to work as a waitress in a pub where she was facing night by night lots of oxidized beer ponds from such industrialized brews. Nevertheless, little time ago she became an enthusiast lambic beer lover, encompassing faro, gueuze and fruity ones, and all its magic and surrounding art.

I am Joan. My story begins when I was on my last year of Food Science and Technology studies, where I wanted to do a stay abroad, although my university didn’t allow me to do that for some reasons such as “Erasmus stays are nonsense” or “you’ll lose your time there”. Finally, after a never-ending fight, I succeed and I was offered to work to do a half-year stay in Gent (Belgium), where there was a nice University with an academic brewery (pilot brewery plant). So well, those 6 months brewing, analysing and tasting beers were unforgettable and very useful to find out my real hobby: brewing beer. Since my Erasmus stay, I have never stopped to brew many different beer styles, although they are born in small amounts only for self consume. Nevertheless, there’s still a lot of work to do…
